Some historians believe that humans in the western world had different sleep patterns before the lightbulb. They'd fall asleep at sundown, wake for a period of an hour or couple hours, then fall back asleep again until dawn.
The time between the two phases of sleep is poetically called "middlesleep". People used that period to write, pray and reflect, visit friends, and engage in petty crime - all kinds of fun and fulfilling activities.
